English Department Scholarships and Awards

2018-19 SRJC ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPS and Awards

Apply NOW for the following scholarships and awards offered through the SRJC English Department. Carefully review the eligibility requirements for each scholarship or award before you submit your application. 

All application materials are due April 20, 2018.

Selections for these awards are made by the SRJC English Department and awards are processed through the SRJC Scholarship Office. Students Receiving Federal Financial Aid must have "remaining need" in their financial aid package.

 

JAMES C. AND CLARA HALL CORTAGE SCHOLARSHIP 
  • For humorous writing (including satire and parody). Samples may include non-fiction as well as the three imaginative genres.
  • Must have already completed 6 or more units at SRJC and be currently enrolled in at least 6 units at SRJC in Spring 2018.
  • Open to continuing and transferring students: Must plan to continue at SRJC in 6 or more untis or transfer to a four-year institution and enroll full-time in Fall 2018.
  • Five awards of $525 each are available.

 

DON L. EMBLEN LITERARY SCHOLARSHIP
  • For students who demonstrate achievement and promise in creative writing.
  • Open to transferring students: Must plan to enroll as a full-time student at a four-year transfer institution in Fall 2018.
  • One award of $500 is available.

 

DUNCAN FRAZIER CREATIVE WRITING AWARD (HONORARY)
  • Awarded to a student from either Fall 2017 or Spring 2018 who demonstrates achievement and promise in creative writing.

 

GENEVIEVE MOTT MEMORIAL LITERARY SCHOLARSHIP
  • Judging is based on samples of imaginative writing (poetry, fiction or drama) provided by the applicant.
  • Open to transferring students: Must plan to enroll as a full-time student at a four-year transfer institution in Fall 2018.
  • Must have already completed 9 or more units at SRJC in Fall 2017 or Spring 2018an
  • One award of $600 is available.

 

GEORGE D. STEWART MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
  • Judging will be based on a writing sample of either non-fiction or one of the three imaginative genres.
  • Award goes to a continuing remedial student with a 2.5+ GPA who has completed or is enrolled in English 305 or 355. 
  • One award of $325 available

Please submit the materials below by April 20, 2018:

  • Coversheet, listing:

    • Mailing Address
    • Email Address
    • Overall GPA (for Stewart scholarship only)
    • Number of SRJC units completed in Fall 2017
    • Number of units currently enrolled in (Spring 2018)
    • Date of expected graduation and college you plan to transfer to in Fall 2018 (if applicable/known).
    • Name of award(s) for which you are applying.
    • Title and genre for each individual work you will submit.
  • Manuscript
    • All work must be typed. Prose must be double-spaced.
    • You may submit 3 poems or a maximum of 15 pages of prose, fiction or drama. Non-fiction is eligible for the Stewart and Cortage Scholarships only. A combination of genres is acceptable if your page count remains under 15.
    • DO NOT include your name on the manuscript.
    • Include your Student ID number and page number on every sheet of paper.

 

Attach your coversheet to your manuscript with a paper clip only and bring or mail your application by April 20, 2018 to:

Manuscripts will not be returned.
